City scientist awarded almost $100000 for diabetes study

A Winnipeg research scientist and assistant professor has been awarded nearly $100,000 to study the effect of vigorous exercise on insulin levels

Jonathan McGavock, assistant professor in the faculty of medicine at the University of Manitoba and research scientist at the Manitoba Institute of Child Health, has been awarded the Cosmopolitan Foundation of Canada Inc.’s annual award for diabetes research. He will be presented with the $98,000 award at a Cosmopolitan Club of Winnipeg event this evening

McGavock will study the impact of rigorous physical activity on risk factors for Type 2 diabetes in overweight adolescents. The study, entitled Physical activity for overweight youth at risk for Type 2 diabetes (POWER), will measure the role of regular aerobic exercise on insulin sensitivity, a predictor of Type 2 diabetes risk.
